Brighton Pavilion's Prospective Conservative MP, Charlotte Vere, has welcomed the announcement by Conservative Housing Spokesman, Grant Shapps MP, that an incoming Conservative Government will work decisively to 'green-up' Britain's existing 25 million homes by offering everyone a 'Green Deal'.
Householders will receive an upfront grant of £6,500 to pay for the scheme and retrofit their home with insulation and devices to reduce their power usage and reduce carbon emissions. Businesses, charities and utility companies will carry out the work. Large stores such as Marks and Spencer have already expressed an interest in the idea and the Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council has aid 'The Green Deal is a big step in the right direction'..
Charlotte was present when Grant Shapps made his announcement to the Building Research Establishment, in a keynote speech, at the end of November.
Commenting on the proposals, Charlotte said: 'The Green deal is an excellent proposal where people will be able to cut the carbon emissions of their homes, see lower gas and electricity bills and not have to pay a penny upfront. In fact the grant paid to householders will be recouped from the investment made over 25 years.
For many years, the Labour Government has been obsessed with its building codes for new houses, neglecting to consider that most of the homes we have now will be with us for the foreseeable future, We need a policy that cuts the CO2 emissions of existing homes as well as those that are to be built in the future.
During his announcement, Grant stated that it is estimated that this proposal will create approximately 70,000 new jobs and create an industry for this country worth some £2.5billion.
This is a great deal for householders and the environment.'
