Brighton and Hove Conservatives are a saddened to hear of the recent passing of David Smith, who served the city as a Conservative Councillor for 21 years.
A long-time friend and colleague, Councillor Carol Theobald said, "David was a dedicated Brightonian who loved this city and a hard-working councillor who represented Rottingdean Ward. He was a very jovial person and a lively Mayor of the city 2006-2007. He was known as the dancing Mayor as he liked to dance at many of his engagements.
His late wife Patricia was a great conservative supporter and Agent for the kemptown Conservative association.
David joined the council specifically to improve sporting facilities and spent his time on the council supporting all culture in the city. He was a good footballer in his younger days playing for Brighton boys.. David was also a member of the Brighton councillors cricket team when they played their annual matches against Portsmouth councillors.
It is sad to lose a dedicated former councillor who served for 21 years and was also an Honorary Alderman."
Mohammed Asaduzzaman, The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, said, "Councillor David Smith, began his distinguished public service in 1974 as a member of Brighton Borough Council. Representing Woodingdean for 21 years, he later became a ward member for Rottingdean Coastal when Brighton and Hove City Council was formed in 1998. He became Mayor for the city in 2006. A former estate agent, David played a pivotal role in ensuring the Royal Pavilion remained accessible to the public year-round and secured vital funds for its restoration. His unwavering commitment to our city and its heritage will always be remembered."
Brighton and Hove Conservatives pay tribute to his service and our thoughts are with his family.
